What / Who Will You Say No To This Week?
This post comes from a conversation that I had with one of my good friends, Munira, last week while we were having coffee and it seemed like a perfect thought to keep in mind as you are going through your week.
Munira is an insanely organized, get it done girl that you would LOVE to have on your team. No matter what you are trying to accomplish, she will figure out a way to get in there and support you so that it not only gets done, but is fantastic. While at work one day a co-worker was asking her if she ever said ‘no’ to anyone at work because she was always so accommodating and willing to help. Munira’s answer was ‘no I don’t’ but as she thought about the conversation she realized that while she may be saying Yes to everyone at work, she was saying NO at home a lot. ‘No, I can’t make it home for dinner’, ‘No, I can’t go with you on your class field trip’.
Anytime you say Yes to ANYTHING there is always a corresponding No that goes with it.
So take some time today to think about what really matters in life before you say yes or no to anything. I realize that when most people say this they seem to have unrealistic expectations that you ALWAY put your family first. Admittedly sometimes putting your family first means showing up for that appointment so that you can make the sale and earn an income. But I know for me there have been many times when I scheduled an appointment on a weekend or during the evening that took time away from the family only to find out that the client was not ready to do anything or was not fully committed to working with me.
If I am scheduling an appointment an appointment with a client on a weekend or during the evening I always ask myself ‘do I like these people?’ ~ I LOVE spending time with Gary and the boys so if I’m taking time away from them I want to make sure I am going to enjoy being with my clients. The other question I ask myself is ‘how motivated are they and what is their timeline?’. If they are ready to go then we meet. If they are thinking about maybe buying in the next 12 months, that can still turn out to be a great clients, but that is an appointment we schedule for an afternoon during the week when they can get away from work and the kids are in school.
It doesn’t always work out this way, but I find that when I am more conscious of the choices I make and how I schedule my appointments that I enjoy my clients more, I get more time with my boys and life seems to come together better because I am not so anxious and resentful.
So pay attention to your decisions this week and adjust as necessary.
