You’ve Got To Know When To Hold ’em and Know When To Fold ’em ~ Sound Advice From The Gambler

Kenny Roger’s isn’t exactly making the rounds on the self improvement and business building circuts, but his song, “The Gambler” popped into my head this morning as I was doing some business planning and it was perfect!
I realize that this song was not meant to be overly insightful, but go with me on this.
“You’ve got to know when to hold ’em and know when to fold ’em”
There are things in your life that are challenging and it’s worth holding on to them. Your family, your sense of self, building a business. All are challenging, but it’s worth holding on because the rewards are exponential. And you also need to know when to fold ’em. What are you holding onto in your life that does not serve you? Relationships? Clients? Unhealthy eating habits? It’s time to let them go.
“Know when to walk away and know when to run”
This one speaks for itself. Sometimes you need to ease out of something and other times you need to just cut bait and move on. Be honest with yourself and commit to making the change.
“Never count your money while you’re sittin’ at the table. There’ll be time enough for counting when the dealing’s done.”
Whenever you start something new, even though we know the results are cumulative, deep down all of us are hoping for instant gratification. We get 1 week into a new workout program and wonder why we haven’t lost 25 pounds. We start a new advertising campaign in business and wonder why the phone doesn’t ring off the hook instantly. Success builds on itself and is comprised of many small steps. So don’t count your money at the table. Commit to whatever you are doing fully and evaluate it at the end. Not in the middle.

‘The Gambler’ was my ‘theme song’ and mantra when we moved from Kirkland Washington to North Idaho. Love this song and the attitude that goes with it. Great job, Nicole, of pulling the concepts into today’s real life. In many of those trips I made back and forth from Sandpoint to Western Washington I would hum this on the road. Thanks, Nicole, for the reminder and the insight! and I’m gong to re-post.
Love you Merry! You are the ultimate gambler and have talked me through many a ‘hand’. 🙂
