How many times have you sat on a piece of information because you didn’t want to tell the other person? You spend countless hours worrying, loose sleep and imagine all sorts of horrific scenarios in your head about how they will react.
So you sit on the information for as long as you possibly can and then when you do tell the other person maybe you don’t give them ALL of the information. Or you try to ‘soften the blow’ by ‘reworking’ some of it?
Ever happened to you?
Stop it! Right here, right now. There are 2 things that you MUST know when delivering information when you are not sure how the other party will react:
1) Rarely does the information itself cause the issue, it’s WHEN the information is delivered
2) You are not responsible for their reaction. That part is up to them.
Case in point: I am on vacation this week with Gary in Greece 😎 and I am committed to truly unplugging so that we can spend time together and we can recharge. (You may be wondering why you are getting this blog post if I am so checking out. Here’s to my amazing VA, Amy Bleser )
Typically going on vacation brings on all sorts of fear as I stress about telling my clients that I will be unavailable for a period of time. Usually it goes something like this:
We plan our vacation and I plan to unplug. As the vacation gets closer I procrastinate to the point that now I feel like I can’t tell my clients because it’s too close to leaving and they will get angry with me. So I don’t tell them and I think I will just monitor things on my phone while we are gone. Pretty soon one email turns into 10 plus a couple of phone calls and we have wasted half the day of our vacation.
This time I vowed it would be different. Not only did I tell my clients that I was going on vacation and would be unavailable, I told them WEEKS before we left. My clients were more than okay with it. In fact, they were gracious and happy and excited for us. I started about 2 weeks ago telling my clients that I would be out of town the first week of April and would they prefer their projects were completed before or after I left. One or two needed to have things done before I left, but the others were more than fine with waiting until I got back. So it allows me to truly relax on vacation, but I also got to enjoy the week before going on vacation because I didn’t have to get everything done.
So make a commitment today to deliver information as soon as possible and as an accountability check, leave a comment below and let me know what you are up to.
Wishing you much success!
