Question Your Fears

As I headed out to teach a class the other day, someone asked me if I had a talisman or a lucky charm that I used whenever I speak in public. For many people, speaking in public ranks up there as one of the most terrifying things of all time.

I have to admit that I have been there too, and certainly bombed in my fair share of speaking engagements.

The interesting part is that I was actually really excited to speak, but everyone had said that I am supposed to be afraid of it. Not only that, but it’s difficult and takes a lot of practice to master. I bought into all of this and really struggled in the beginning.

Then, one day, I realized that I’m actually not afraid of public speaking at all. In fact, I look forward to it. I was acting nervous and scared because that is how everyone told me I should react.

Realizing that was a huge turning point for me in how my classes went. I was much more relaxed and could be myself. As a result, my delivery has gotten much better and I get fantastic feedback.

It pays to question your fears. What is it that has been holding you back?  What if you decided to let it go? Could you do it? How would things be different if you did?
