When Things Aren’t What You Expect – Sometimes They’re Better

I’m at Miraval spa in Tucson this week. If you’ve never been, it’s worth adding to your list. This is my happy place. Especially in March when it’s cold and rainy at home and a sunny 83 degrees here today.
When we got here my friend asked what my intention was for the trip. I hadn’t really thought about it, so I blurted out ‘connect with my joy’. Not because that was my actual intention, but because that sounded good and why not – more joy is usually a good thing.
But as I’ve stayed present the last 2 days a theme all its own has emerged. Virtually everything that has happened here hasn’t been what I expected but it has been so much better.
- The room that I booked ended up having an odd shower set up, so I called just to see if they had another option. They switched me to a beautiful room that I absolutely love.
- The workout class that I went to expecting to see my favorite instructor was taught by someone else, but it was exactly what my body needed.
- I took a meditation class where the instructor talked WAY too much, but because she did I stopped listening and had a much deeper meditation because I wasn’t focused on the things around me.
- I signed up for what I thought was going to be a vigorous yoga class, but when we all showed up a little tired, the instructor adjusted to meet our needs and it was the perfect class for what my body needed.
In all of these moments, it wasn’t initially what I was expecting and I had a decision to make. Do I get upset about it, or do I open to the experience to see what happens? EVERY time it ended up being better.
It made me wonder how many times in daily life I waste time and energy being upset that things aren’t going the way I think they should be. If I’m being honest, probably a lot. But if I can set that initial frustration aside, is there a chance that what is happening is actually better?
To your success!

I’ll admit it, I’m not great at asking for help. Even when I know I need it. There are a variety of reason I struggle with asking: I’m busy and taking a step back to asses what I can outsource feels like one more task I don’t have time for. The task is something I’m…
