Don’t Confuse Negotiable with Charging What Your Worth

There has been a lot of confusion about what negotiable means lately.

Fees are negotiable, your value is not.

Fees have always been negotiable.

  1. Clients have the ability to choose agents based on the fee they charge, because not everyone charges the same thing.
  2. You have the ability to negotiate your fee, if you so choose.
  3. Buyers and sellers have never been required to use an agent – hello for sale by owners.

But no one can require that you work for less.

Real estate is a complicated transaction that has a big financial impact on our clients financially and emotionally. And if things go sideways there can be legal implications. Helping clients navigate that has value.

The news makes it sound like what we do is purely transactional, but it’s so much more than that. You get deep into your clients lives, their hopes, their dreams all of it. It’s about a lot more than a building with some bedrooms and bathrooms.

What you do for your clients adds value and you should be paid accordingly. None of this changes that.

What it does mean is that there is more ‘noise’ to navigate from the media and you need to be able to articulate your value now more than ever. And the first step to doing that, is managing your energy.

So rather than spending endless hours worrying about negotiating your fee, spend it learning to manage your energy and articulate your value.
