The Real Reason We Started Experiences vs Stuff for the Holidays
We’ve been doing experiences vs stuff with the boys for years. This year we are in Palm Springs loving the sunshine.
It’s a tradition we all look forward to. We’ve gone all sorts of places: Maui, Boston, New York, Costa Rica, and Ireland just to name a few. On the last night, we pick a fun spot for dinner and decide the location for next year. Stay tuned for where our next adventure will be.
There are a couple of reasons we started doing experiences during the holidays. It’s great to get everyone out of the house, and I would much rather spend money on a trip that random things that they don’t want or need.
But the biggest reason we started the tradition is that it requires planning and a commitment months ahead of time – usually 6 months or more.
Booking a trip that far in advance is the ultimate form of betting on yourself. Trusting that you will earn the income and be able to take the time off.
I’m not talking about going into loads of debt as a motivator to earn more. That has never worked for me. In fact it does the opposite and stresses me out to the point that I can’t do anything.
But booking a trip requires that you buy plane tickets and place deposits, that says you are doing this. Plus it gives you something to look forward to all year long.
I learned this lesson big time when booking our Costa Rica trip in May one year for travel in December.
I used a travel agent to plan everything from the hotels to the excursions because I’m not familiar with the area. When they sent everything over there was an option to pay the deposit or pay for the trip in full – in May. I thought I was paying the 10% deposit, but accidentally hit the wrong button and ended up paying for the WHOLE thing 7 months ahead of time.
There was a brief moment of panic at sending that much money that far in advance. But as I sat there I realized – this is perfect! Talk about betting on myself. I let go of the stress and focused on my business.
It ended up being one of our favorite family trips. It was a new experience for all of us, we stayed in great hotels, everything was taken care of, and there was zero money stress.
It was a huge lesson in believing in abundance and my own ability to create the income I want to support whatever dream I have. For the record, that was also the year I went to Maui and Italy.
That is my wish for you.
That you are able to move forward on your dreams and not constantly be stuck waiting to see if things work out only to feel like life passed you buy, again.
