3 Things I’m Doing Differently This Holiday Season

3 things I'm doing differently for the holidays

I love the last 2 weeks of the year – sorta.

The holidays are beautiful and spazzy all at the same time. I love Christmas with the family, and getting together with friends. Yet December can leave me feeling depleted, and like I’m spinning in circles going no where.

It’s an interesting time for a lot of people. Nancy and I talked about the holidays in one of our recent podcast episodes. We both got pretty vulnerable about traditions, un-met expectations and what it looks like when everyone has different feelings about this time of year.

This December I’m trying a few new things to stay present, enjoy the moments and roll into January grateful for 2025 and excited for 2026.

Here are 3 things making the biggest difference:

  1. I’m paying attention to my diet and workouts rather than giving up on both hoping to get ‘back on track’ in January. I’m really sensitive to sugar – it is a migraine trigger and instantly zaps my energy. I’ve found the best way to counteract sugar has been to increase my protein intake. It helps to stabilize my blood sugar so that I don’t crave as many cookies, and when I have a cocktail it doesn’t affect me as much. My favorite thing right now is powdered bone broth. I drink some before going to an event where I plan to have a drink and it’s really helping. And while I’m not always happy about getting up early to hit the gym 3 days a week, the consistency helps me feel grounded and boosts my energy.
  2. Giving myself more space, and the opportunity to say no. I love being social, but my battery only lasts so long. This year I’m giving myself permission to say no to some things. I still get a case of FOMO every now and then, but I’m rolling into next week with a lot more energy than I usually have right about now and that feels really good.
  3. Creating moments with the boys. We usually do a family trip in December. Experiences vs Stuff has been a part of our holiday tradition for years. One of the reasons we started traveling is that staying home often felt disconnected. Meaning everyone is in the same house, but doing their own things with limited interaction. This year we marked out time for us to spend as a family so that we still felt connected. Some of those moments include: Dinner for the 4 of us the night before Thanksgiving, Seahawks games, a concert, and family dinner at one of our favorite restaurants next week. It’s our time to have fun while still leaving space for the boys to do their own thing.

What helps you navigate the holidays?

Wishing you the very best!
Nicole
