When Holding On Holds Us Back

We all have pieces of our past that we hold on to tighter than we realize.

Whether it’s the ‘things’ in your physical space or thoughts and beliefs that affect the lens through which you see the world. They all affect your energy. Some support us, but many of them hold us back and keep us stuck.

I was reminded of this last week when my sister, brother and I were packing up our Mom’s house to move her back to Washington state. Our Mom may not qualify as a hoarder, but she is definitely in the super saver category. She saves EVERYTHING! In this picture I’m wearing the summer hat that went with my school uniform from when I was 8. She’s been holding onto this thing for 42 years, and moved it at least 9 times! While it was fun to reminisce for 30 seconds and take a picture, that’s a LONG time to hold onto something.

Her physical space is so full that she literally cannot allow anything new into her life. She is living in the past in so many ways. My whole body constricts when I’m surrounded by too much stuff and I can actually feel myself unwind and expand as space is created.

We all do this to an extent. But for most of us it’s our thoughts that keep us stuck.

Our thoughts can create the same constriction, but we don’t always realize the connection.

Our thoughts turn into beliefs and they turn into ‘well this is just the way it is’. Our beliefs are often our biggest obstacle to achieving our goals.

Your thoughts create your reality, yet most of our thoughts are unconscious. We actually don’t even realize they are a thought that can be changed. We just think we are observing what is. But it’s really our interpretation of what’s happening. Have you ever been part of a conversation where the other person had completely different take aways? It’s because they have different beliefs, and so they saw it through a different lens.

The tricky thing about it is that it’s often hard to see how your own beliefs are affecting the world around you.

And so, if you are trying to make some changes or achieve new goals, chances are you need some new thoughts and beliefs that create the space in your life for it to happen.

It’s the old adage of – what got you here won’t get you there.

But how do you know what to change? Which thoughts / beliefs are holding you back? And how do you get yourself to hold onto the new belief when your past doesn’t support it?

The best way is to have some kind of coach or accountability partner. They can be your mirror.
