Why Proving Yourself Is A Bad Idea

I competed on a listing this week that I didn’t get. It was a great one too – awesome house, great clients. It was one I really wanted.

When I got done pouting I took a few minutes to ask myself, ‘where did it go wrong’?

Our first appointment was amazing! The second one, not so much. And when I look back, there was 1 key difference. My energy.

For the first appointment I spent time focusing my energy so that I was feeling confident with nothing to prove. I showed up with an attitude that said ‘I’m great at what I do and I know I can get you a great result’. In a non jerky kind of way. I felt REALLY good when I left that appointment, and the clients seemed excited to work together. They just wanted to meet one more time before making a final decision on who to hire.

However, in the second appointment – I couldn’t get my energy to lock in as clearly, and I showed up differently. I was there to prove I was the right agent. My confidence and energy were good, but not great. Not as grounded and solid as they were the first time around. And it showed. I could feel the energy shift in the middle of the conversation and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get it back.

And they went with the other agent. Big bummer.

What would I have done differently? I would have focused on my energy more before the second appointment and not taken the bait when they wanted me to prove myself. I would have held firm to ‘I’m the best agent for you and this transaction’. I’ve already established my process, which is designed to net you the most in any given market. Either we are a good fit or not, but chasing your approval isn’t my thing.

As a big a bummer as not getting the listing was, I am grateful for the powerful example of the difference our energy makes. I truly believe that if my energy has been the same in the second appointment as the first I would have gotten the listing.

Ever get caught in the trap of ‘proving’ yourself to clients only to have it end up not working? As you can see from the story above, I can help you experience first hand the difference energy makes and ways to shift it in your favor.

If your energy could use a shift I invite you to check out the Prosper Mastermind  and / or the monthly Align and Attract meditations. Have questions? Hit reply and let’s chat.

To your success!
Nicole
