They Never Should Have Hired Me

Listing agents

Years ago, I spent months with some clients looking for investment properties – and got absolutely no where.

We spent hours looking at houses, and I hated every minute of it.

I could tell you they were awful clients. They weren’t.

I could say they weren’t true buyers. They were.

I could tell you the market wasn’t right for buying investment properties. Yet others were having great success.

The truth – I wasn’t the right agent for the job.

I’m a REALLY good agent. If you are looking to buy or sell a house, I’m the BEST. If you want to buy a traditional property and rent it out, I can do that.

If you’re looking to buy a distressed home, a foreclosure, or a diamond in the rough that you can lowball, and you want to keep throwing offers out there by the dozen to see what sticks – I’m not your girl. There are some agents that LOVE doing that. It’s a challenge, a game and they are great at it.

We talk about boundaries a lot when it comes to being a real estate agent. Usually it’s centered around time boundaries, and things like do you work nights and weekends or do open houses, etc?

Today’s post is about boundaries around which clients to work with based on your skills and business model. I am REALLY good at what I do, but that doesn’t mean I am great at every type of real estate transaction. Or even if I’m good at it, it might not be something I want to do.

And that’s okay.

I’ve got a phenomenal network of agents and if I’m not the right person, I usually have someone fantastic that I can refer a client too.

But here’s the thing. Whether I can refer them out or not, a big part of running a successful business AND having a life is knowing when to say no – I’m not the right agent for you.

The fastest way to burn yourself out, and work endless hours that don’t turn into closings and paychecks, is to say yes to clients you never should have.

Be honest, when have you said yes, when. you should have said no and referred a client out?

A big part of being successful is having the courage to say no to what isn’t right for you.

To your success!

Summer is often a season of expectations not meeting reality. I used to think my perfect summer meant iced tea on the patio while reading every day. For the record, that’s never happened. And for a while, I felt bad about it — like I was missing out, like I was doing summer wrong. Until…

It’s Okay For Things To Be Different

May 1, 2026

I often find myself comparing things. I Used To Be So Afraid Of This…

April 24, 2026

I used to dread client conversations. Especially pricing conversations with sellers in a softer market, like we are in right now. I was afraid of letting them down. It came up this week with a new listing. They bought at the height of the market in 2022. Today’s prices are lower than that. How do…

What If Your Income Didn’t Depend On The Market?

April 10, 2026

There are multiple markets occurring right now – in the same cities, on the same streets. Sellers are experiencing it one way. Buyers are experiencing it another. And agents? All over the board. Same market. Completely different results. So what’s the difference? What you believe. What you look for. And how you show up. Two…
