Feeling Overwhelmed? Play Hooky For The Day

I know, I know, the to do list is never ending and it feels like you are slipping further behind every day.  Well here is the reality on that.  There isn’t any magic cure out there to make that stop.  You are a very busy person and there will likely always be lots of demands on your time.

Yes, it is easy to get overwhelmed, and know that you can’t change the ever growing list, but what you can do is be present in whatever you are doing and do it to the best of your ability so that once it is done you can check it off your list and not have to come back to it.

The other important thing to remember is balance.  It is easy to get caught up in checking things off a list, but the law of diminishing returns comes into play and after a while you are not nearly as effective as you were when you started.  So take a step back and give yourself a break.

Last Friday, Gary (my husband) and I took the day off and drove to Edmonds.  A cute little town on the water about 40 minutes north of us.  We had lunch together and had a great time cruising around and looking in all of the various art galleries, cooking shops and antique stores.  It was a really fun way to connect and spend time just the two of us without the chaos of running errands and having the kids around.  It was a great day and renewed both of us with our energy and relationship so that we were able to dive back into life personally and professionally  when we got home.

So give it a try.  Take a step back and do something for yourself.  If you can’t take the whole day, then take an hour and walk or read a book or just enjoy a great cup of tea.  Not only do you deserve it, you need it.

    Nicole,
You are SOOO right! I tend to go about 1000 mph, then crash and burn. You know what…I think I actually do better that way. I throw myself into work and family for about four weeks without looking up, then I feel so exhausted (but with alot accomplished) that I take a week and just manage what is on my plate without turning up the volume at all. I’m home by noon, watch tv and sort through my tupperware drawer. No guilt there either. :^)
