Something To Think About …

Whatever you’re thinking about is literally like planning a future event. When you’re worrying, you are planning. When you are appreciating, you are planning … What are you planning?

Is it just me, or does business planning overwhelm you? I’ve tried doing a traditional plan over the years. One of my favorie quotes: “Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day after day.”
Be consistent. Each day may not in itself be the most successful day of your career, but added up, all the days equal greatness.
What is Discipline?
When I hear the word “discipline,” I cringe. I think of must-do’s or shoulds. It doesn’t sound like fun stuff I want to be doing, but drudgery I’d rather not do. The rebel inside of me wants to run and avoid those things.
So, how do I get that rebel to be disciplined and do the things I want her to? How do I get her to work hard, exercise, eat right, be a good mom, keep a clean house, etc? It’s simple: I offer her choices. She has the freedom to choose whether to be disciplined or not.
Example: I am a runner. During my morning runs, sometimes I am tired. Sometimes after the first mile I don’t feel like doing any more. Rather than pushing myself and MAKING myself do more miles, I give myself the option to quit now. And I mean it. I have my own permission to stop running and go home early. It’s okay if I stop now and get in the car. It’s okay if I only do the ONE mile today. Do I ever actually stop at this point? Very rarely. But the freedom of choice I offer myself is the key. When I CHOOSE to keep going, CHOOSE to go further, CHOOSE to be discipled, the rebel inside calms down and stops fighting me.
Think of dieting. If you go on a diet and tell yourself “I may not have any chocolate. Candy is off limits,” then all you can think about is chocolate. It’s all you want. It’s what you crave. But, if you give yourself the freedom to eat anything you want, knowing there are consequences of course, that inner struggle isn’t so great.
I apply this to my business as well. I have my own permission to quit early, to not be a super Realtor, to not stay in flow with my people, to not be as successful. No one is making me succeed. I CHOOSE to succeed. I work hard because I can, not because there is someone or something forcing me to. And I give myself that choice every day. I even give myself permission to quit the business, if I want! I don’t have to be a successful Realtor. I choose to be. This is the key for me doing anything meaningful. I must truly want to do it, choose to do it, and have my own permission not to do it as well.
So am I disciplined? Am I working hard today? Well, this morning I walked my dogs, fed/ bathed/ dressed my six-year old daughter, ran 3.5 miles and came to work! I am sitting at my desk now making lists of all the great things I WANT to do at work this week!
