I recently surveyed a group of agents and asked them what they struggle with the most in their business.
The answer was unanimously:
The interesting thing, though, is that while we all struggle with the lack of time, many agents wear it like a badge of honor. I actually heard an agent boast during a meeting a few weeks ago that she went nine months without a day off. Nine months!
Agents also talk about how they can not commit to doing things socially or with their families because they never know when they will need to meet with a client.
News flash: There is no badge of honor that comes with working like that!
Agents feel like they have to be available 24/7 for their clients or their clients will be unhappy. Worse yet, agents fear losing a client if they are not available at the drop of a hat.
When did good service equal giving up our entire lives to be at the beck and call of our clients?
You can have a business and a life. Your clients will respect your boundaries, they just need to know what they are.
The commitments you make to yourself and your family are just as important as the ones you make to your clients. Actually even more so.
Tell your clients when you are available and when you are not. If they call and ask for an appointment during a time that you have something else planned, politely say “I have an appointment already at that time, I could meet you at x time.”
I know it is easier said than done, but try it. You will be amazed at the response you get from your clients and pleasantly surprised that it IS possible to have a successful business AND a life.
To your success!
