Make Your Goals About Experiences vs Stuff

“A mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Isn’t that the whole point of setting goals? To become more tomorrow than we are today.
Typically we focus on things when we set goals. Money, objects, etc. We think that if we focus on them, the rest will follow. We will become someone different when we make more money. But the reality is that more money just makes you more of what you already are.
Not that it is a bad thing. But if you are looking to become something different than you are today, focusing on the money will not get you there.
Not only that, but focusing on the money isn’t always as motivating as we think it is. When the going gets tough do you push through because of your monetary goal? Or do you start thinking maybe making do with less is better?
In our house, we are all about experiences. Usually when I post on social media I use the hashtag #experiencesvsstuff. Full disclosure, we like our stuff too, but we focus on our experiences as the things that matter most.
The picture above is from our trip to New York City this week. We must have walked 10 miles a day seeing the sights. It was 5 days of non stop experiences. We came home happy, tired, and definitely different than before we left. Especially the boys. It was amazing for them to see how people live in a big city like that.
As we celebrate holidays this next week, and look to 2017, spend some time thinking about the experiences that matter most to you, and who you want to become next year.
What books can you read?
What places would you like to go?
Who would you like to spend your time with?
How would you like to feel?
What would you like to learn?
These are the things that will drive you. Journal them, visualize them, and most importantly, plan them. Plan for the experiences that will change your life. Don’t just wait for them to show up, or for an opening in your schedule. We all know how that turns out.
Wishing you and yours the merriest of holidays, and the greatest success!
Nicole

Can calls really translate into referrals? Are some more effective than others? When we work with clients it’s easy to go into ‘get it done’ mode. We focus on getting from contract to closing as quickly and smoothly as possible. And to be fair, that’s a big part of what our clients hire us to…
