It’s Okay To Opt Out Of The Conversation

It’s been 2 weeks since the NAR settlement. How’s it going?
Scratch that – don’t answer that. Better yet, don’t ask the question in the first place.
Yes, there have been major changes in our industry. The impact to our business, depends on who you ask.
I’ve talked to agents who:
- Can’t get Sellers to value them, but are fine with buyers
- Can’t get buyers to sign an agency agreement and agree to pay their fee
- Are so busy spinning they can’t get anything going
- Are waiting for things to shake out
- Are on the hunt to find listings that are not offering an SOC to prove that the sky is falling
And best of all:
I’ve talked to agents who are completely unaffected by the changes, selling houses, articulating their value, taking great care of their clients, and – getting paid.
All of these experiences are happening in the EXACT same market. In some cases, the exact same office.
Beware of empathy.
I know, that sounds like a terrible thing to say. I actually pride myself on being empathetic. It’s part of what makes me a great agent and an event better coach.
But there are times when it back fires. And this has the potential to be one of them.
Here’s how it starts – you’re talking to an agent who is struggling. You want to let them know they aren’t alone. That you too have struggled. And in your well meaning commiserating, you shift your energy and your focus. You start to identify with those moments of struggle, and before you know it, you are down the doomsday rabbit hole, which can completely shut your business down.
I am giving myself permission to opt out of conversations. Meaning I have literally gotten up and left the room mid conversation. I have also told people, I refuse to answer that question or continue this conversation if I feel like it has even the slightest potential to shift my energy into doubt or fear.
Yes, these changes are big. Yes, there are conversations to be had. Yes, there are big opportunities available to succeed if you can manage your energy and stay in the game.
So this is your invitation to opt out of conversations that aren’t serving you.
If you are struggling and could use some help, or your mindset is great, but your skills are rusty, I invite you to join me along with Erin Bradley and Jennifer Myers for a collaboration class: Navigating the NAR Changes. It’s a 4 part class from September 11th – October 2nd.
To your success!

Tomorrow is the 4th. This is your reminder – it’s okay to take time off. Just because technology allows us to work anytime, anywhere doesn’t mean you should. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do, is to do nothing productive at all. Enjoy the day and be present. To your success! Nicole
