You Set Your Goal, But What’s Your Why?

Last week you focused on what was good in 2014. Now let’s roll it over into 2015.
You likely have your income goal for the year, which is great. But let’s take it one step further and look at your why.
I’m not talking about your big why of saving the planet or anything like that. What are you going to do with that money? Why do you want to make it in the first place?
- I want to invest more
- I want to travel
- I want to pay off debt
All great and noble answers, but all missing something. A clear definition. Investing $1 counts as investing, does that work? Travel is always a tricky one too. People talk about it all the time and before you know it, the time is gone and you missed out yet again.
Know this, the Universe is conspiring in your favor. Your job is to make it easy on them with being as specific as you can. So exactly how much do you want to invest? Where and when do you want to travel? How much debt do you want to pay off?
*Mindset trick: What you focus on expands and focusing on paying off debt is a tricky one. While a noble aspiration, it can often bring with it more debt, because that is what you are focused on. Instead, shift it to be included in your investment category, since every dollar you are not paying credit card interest on will likely bring you a 12%-18% return.
The more specific you are, the more motivated you will be as well. Let’s be real, even the best laid plans meet with resistance. You don’t want to make that extra phone call, your client is being difficult, etc. It happens to all of us. Knowing why you want to make the money and what you are going to do with it will help keep your momentum going.
It’s kind of like skipping dessert and going for a run instead. In the moment you might grumble about it, but the result it worth it.
Listing out what you are going to do with the money also helps you double-check your goal. Is it enough to get you there? If not, you need to adjust either your goal or what you plan to accomplish this year.
So take 5 minutes and list 3 things that you will do with the money once you earn it this year.
As with everything, there are short cuts to get you there.

What If Everything is An Experiment?
I’ll admit it, I’m not great at asking for help. Even when I know I need it. There are a variety of reason I struggle with asking: I’m busy and taking a step back to asses what I can outsource feels like one more task I don’t have time for. The task is something I’m…

I competed on a listing this week that I didn’t get. It was a great one too – awesome house, great clients. It was one I really wanted. When I got done pouting I took a few minutes to ask myself, ‘where did it go wrong’? Our first appointment was amazing! The second one, not…

I’ve spent the last few days in Virginia at my favorite real estate conference, Genuine Hustle, where I had the honor of presenting a session on asking powerful questions. Can calls really translate into referrals? Are some more effective than others? When we work with clients it’s easy to go into ‘get it done’ mode. We focus on getting from contract to closing as quickly and smoothly as possible. And to be fair, that’s a big part of what our clients hire us to…
